Working With Our Firm

What to expect as a client

1. Initial Consultation

Every engagement begins with a direct, confidential conversation about your situation — whether that's an active audit notice, a nexus question, or a broader compliance review — and an honest read on whether it's actually worth pursuing further.

2. Engagement Letter

Once we've agreed on scope, we'll issue a written engagement letter outlining fees, scope of work, and the terms of our representation before any work begins. Scope is sized to the decision at hand, not padded.

3. Ongoing Communication

You will work directly with Kyle throughout the matter, with regular updates and plain-language explanations of strategy, so decisions rest in your hands — not buried in a memo.

Frequently Asked

Common questions from new clients

I received a state sales tax audit notice. What should I do first?

Avoid responding directly to the auditor before speaking with counsel. Early missteps in scoping or document production can materially affect the outcome of an audit. Contact our office as soon as possible after receiving a notice.

Do you work with clients outside of Minnesota?

Yes. Multistate sales and use tax matters are, by definition, not limited to a single state. We regularly advise clients located throughout the United States on their obligations across multiple jurisdictions.

What documents will you need from me?

This varies by engagement, but often includes sales and purchase transaction detail, exemption certificates, entity organizational information, and any correspondence already received from a state taxing authority.

How are fees structured?

Fee arrangements are discussed and agreed upon before any engagement begins and will be documented in your engagement letter. We're happy to discuss options during your initial consultation.
